By the Mississippi River in Scott county, MO. Second daughter; there would be three.

Moved to St. Louis

The family would stay in the West End from then on; houses on West Pine and Maryland Ave. In summers, there would be visits to Scott county to see Hawkins relatives.

St. Louis's devastating tornado

Geneva's school was destroyed. From then on, she would commute by streetcar to another school, but her Central High group kept its class identity.

Geneva finished high school before her 17th birthday, graduating early with a January class. See the yearbook story on the homepage here.

Married

Geneva and Don were very attached to the minister who had given so much attenion to their youth group (who put out the weekly bulletin, and nearly always went for ice cream or sodas when it was printed), that they drove to Kansas City, where he had recently transfered, in order to have him perform the ceremony. That meant no best man, no bridesmaid, no family. They had a flat tire on the way, so arrived late, dusty and dirty. Rev. Wright had more duties that day and Geneva had to insist on a short bit of time to clean up and feel presentable. Don and G went on to the Wisconsin Dells for their honeymoon.

California trip

Business trip first, by train to San Jose (Sunsweet Prune and Pratt-Low Cannery), "stayed with cannery owner and wife overlooking Santa Clara Valley when it was all unspoiled and beautiful", wrote Don. On to Pacific Grove to visit the Priors and see their Grove Sportswear store. Don got poison oak, Geneva got appendicitis requiring a week in hospital, so they ended up being away four weeks - and had to wire Don's office for additional funds.

Their dream house!

A brick rancher that Geneva was very involved in designing was finished in the summer of 1953. In a new section called Dennis Hills in the north St. Louis Village of Riverview, it was on nearly an acre of land, and in winter had a slight view of the Mississippi River a mile away. G always preferred to be near water, so she chose to leave the west end and southwest neighborhoods they'd known. This summer was one of St. Louis's scorchers; G was pregnant; and the house was not finished when they had to leave the duplex they'd sold (Hampton and Juniata). So G had to move the family twice, from the duplex to a temporary apartment and then finally to their house - giving birth in-between - and of course, being G, she scrubbed each place she left absolutely spotless in spite of it all. Note, it was 104 degrees the day before Pat was born.

Her own car!

When Geneva started working, she took streetcars, just as she had when studying. Some time after the war, she and Don acquired a car, and of course there were trade-ups from time to time. But G only learned to drive, and then got her own car, when she started toting around two little kids - and their friends. My best guess is that her pink Rambler was acquired in 1957, but could have been 1956.

Three-week road trip enjoying Don's new, air-conditioned Oldsmobile 88. Drove Route 66 out to California, visiting parks in New Mexico and Arizona. Went to San Diego and made a quick trip over to Tijuana. Had a great time in Disneyland with two nights at its hotel. Visited G's father and went to Knotts Berry Farm. Up California to visit the Priors living in Del Monte Forest on the 17-Mile-Drive, then to their cabin in Kibirz on a fork of the American River near Lake Tahoe. Drove home via Salt Lake City and Bryce Canyon, Estes Park and Colorado Springs.

Family New Year's Eve

A big loss for the family in November: the death of Don's father. He had spent every weekend and holiday with the family, to everyone's enjoyment; Saturday then was always Date Night for Don and G. This year, no date-night-New-Year's but a family evening: out to see "Charade" at a movie theater. The next summer, Don, G and Pat would see some of the film's locations.

25th Anniversary trip to Europe

NY-Southampton on the SS France as the start of a 9-country tour, returning from Paris. G was planning to go to Europe with a friend ca 1938-1939 but Don convinced her to forego travel and marry. The friend she would have gone with met her future husband on the ship home! At long last, Geneva got to Europe (with Don and Pat) - just the first of many visits to come, all obviously quite inspiring for her art. Passports show a few of the stops: arrived Southampton 13 Jul 1964, embarked at Dover 17 Jul 1964 and arrived in Belgium ... Switzerland 6 Aug 1964 stamped at Perly ... 14 Aug France, the last stop, with an eventual flight home from Paris.

They later flew to the big island of Hawaii, staying at Mauna Kai Resort, run by Rockefeller Corp. All American plan and expensive, said Don, but they enjoyed themselves.

Ten-day vacation with the Kuhlmanns, flying into San José Feb 1. Conway drove a rented Jeep so they could all explore and go on to the Pacific coast. Departed Juan Santamaria airport on Valentine's Day. That day, passports show admission to the Bahamas, so Don and G must have gone on to the Kuhlmanns' home in Eleuthera.

Moved to Hilton Head

Don retired as President of Bene-Patterson Co in January. Don & G sold their St. Louis house and moved to their property in Sea Pines on Hilton Head.

G & Don flew into Stuttgart (along with two friends) to pick up the Mercedes he had ordered, and then enjoyed a road trip, visiting Munich for Oktoberfest, the Italian Riviera (Ligure), and Switzerland. They flew home to the US on October 10.

Helping out the company after retirement, Don attended a broker management seminar at Greenbrier; beautiful setting and ambiance for G to enjoy. After 3 days, drove up to NY to visit Pat, enjoying the scenic drive. Saw Amadeus and some off-Broadway shows, and once again Pat invited friends to visit with G & Don at her apartment.

Just before the trip, on his birthday, Nov. 3, Don had his first hole-in-one, achieved on the 8th hole of the Sea Pines Club Course. After the bridge tournament, G and Don went on to St. Louis to visit Ron and family as well as friends.

The townhouse in South Beach was great when they wanted to travel, but it lacked a good studio space (and a fireplace, which G also missed). When 51 Deer Run Lane was on the market, the owner (Art Holstein) was insistent on selling it - with his wonderful studio - to G. The Holsteins moved to the historic Edgar Fripp House (Tidalholm) in Beaufort that was used in "The Great Santini" and "The Big Chill" - and Hilda invited us to come see it.

Renaissance cruise from Antigua

Flew in to take a cruise across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands, Casablanca (saw Malcom Forbes's estate and museum with many of his Fabergé eggs), Cadiz and finally Lisbon on April 30. Had a top floor hotel room there with a large balcony overlooking the city that made room service dining irrestible. Took a local train up the coast along the beach for some independent sightseeing. Flying home, stopped off to visit Pat in NYC for a few days.

Christmas - New Year 1994-1995
Vacation: Florida Keys

Don, G and Pat spent a Christmas season in the Keys, flying in and out of Miami and renting a car. Christmas itself was spent at a quiet B&B on Deer Key, and we went to church service on Big Pine. Next, Key West, which G and Pat liked so much they insisted on staying longer and cancelling other reservations - even though G was having a rough time with back pain and could hardly go out, while Don and Pat toured in town. It was too cold this year for boat excursions or snorkeling. Accommodations were scarce in this high season but Pat found rooms at Caribbean House. Excellent restaurants were recommended by the owner of Blue Heron Bookstore where Pat was browsing history books and chatting.

Or nearly! Sailed on October 28, occupying Cabin 333 on Renaissance VII (114 passengers in 57 cabins, with 72 crew). Stops in Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Mumbai (Nov 14), Phuket (Nov 22), Pulau Pinang, Malaysia (Nov 23), ending in Singapore Nov 25. Flew from Singapore to San Francisco on Nov 27, then to NYC to visit Pat before going home to Hilton Head.

vacation: Rhone River Cruise

Pat was at Cap d'Antibes with a rented car (sketch below from her balcony) when G and Don were at the Ambassadeur Hotel in Juan-les-Pins, June 10-15. Each morning she and Kristian picked up picnic food and wine, got G and Don and went off to find places where G could enjoy sketching. Then G and Don started their Rhone cruise, Pat and Kristian toured wine country by car, and all united in Paris at the end. G and Don flew back to NYC with Pat. A trip that inspired many works of art! The sketch below was done from Pat's balcony at Cap d'Antibes.

St. Louis: funeral trip

Geneva's sister Dorothy died a few days after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. G and Don drove to St. Louis for the family gathering, staying with Ron and family; Pat drove out from NYC to join them and return to Hilton Head together.
